Actually flying over the spectacular Bay Area with KDFC listener Bruce Bolla and his wife Karen at about 1500 feet.

This is your co-pilot, me.

Bruce is also a professional pilot for United Airlines and a pilot instructor. It was a perfect day to fly with hardly a bump all along the way and terrific visibility. Here’s some of our trip in pictures. Hope you enjoy them.

The aircraft, a Beech Bonanza. Sweet.

Our new Bay Bridge under construction.

Fort Mason and Alcatraz.

Lake Merritt in Oakland.

Circling Alcatraz.

The Ritz Carlton, Half Moon Bay.

Approaching Half Moon Bay Airport.

Yes, Bruce even let me fly for a few minutes. Fun!

  1. Great pics. It’s been absolutely gorgeous all week in Half Moon Bay. Even from the ground!

  2. Hoyt, fantastic views from above. Glad you had a sparkling day to do this.
How did you get the airplane bein airborne?
BTW Karen and Bruce are personal friends of mine. They are prolofic world travelers, as they may have shared with you. I get some of their photos of world travels in real time. The latest was Viet Nam in Feb 2010.
I went up with a pilot friend over the Bay Area several years ago. I was at the controls for a short time too. I know how you feel.
    Anyway, thanks for sharing.

  3. Hoyt, I’m so jealous. You got a great day. The view of the Bay Bridge was very enlightening. So that’s what they’re up to.

  5. Hoyt,

Great photos! They reminded me of one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done…

This may be hard to believe but I flew under the Golden Gate Bridge in 1976…with my brother Romey at the controls. Take off on Sausalito Waterfront, very early on the weekend…in an old two-seater sea-plane – they used to be docked up by the houseboats near Richardson Bridge – circle over Richmond Harbor gaining altitude…crossing high over Angel Island, steep drop down, door open to snap underside of bridge – windows too scratched up for a clear shot…. full trottle thrust to carry us under – camera drops into green sea …a flash of darkness as we crossed underneath…and on out into the open blue… What fun!
