We joked about it on the air whenever the market tanked that we couldn’t afford to retire…ever.betsy2 Then she called. “Loving Hawaii. Inspired to retire” was her comment, more or less. Actually I knew that she was thinking about it, picking a date, but I didn’t want it to end. Neither did you, so it seems.

We were just thrown together on the air back 2002 as so often happens in radio (or any work environment).  Over time we got to know about our families, our pets, our love of cooking and travel. Betsy said that what she’ll miss the most is just hanging out with me for three hours each morning. We had gotten to a point where I would comment on a news story I had just read and she’d look up and laugh saying, “I’m just typing that up”. Knowing how we both wear our hearts on our sleeves,  a “farewell show” would have drowned in a sea of tears and floated on a cloud of used tissues.

Dan from Richmond called this morning saying he is a big believer in “closure” and wanted to say “goodbye”,  so this is your chance. Leave a comment below for Betsy. Your comments after my heart surgery in ’07 meant so much (and still do), I’m sure these will mean the world to Bets.

One couldn’t have a better partner.

  1. I rarely laugh at things heard on the radio but must say that the Hoyt & Betsy morning times brought a lot of laughter for me and I’m sure for many others.

It would be nice if you could come back for a radio visit from time to time but this is probably not allowed.

    Very best of luck.

    Sincerely, Jim

  2. Betsy, say it isn’t so! I’ll miss your cheery voice in the mornings. It always made me smile to hear you and Hoyt banter back and forth.
Best wishes for your retirement. Boo hoo, though, from my own selfish point of view.

  3. Hi Betsy,
I listen to you and Hoyt on mornings that I drive to work. You two are such a great team! I usually found myself laughing out loud and then would look at the cars next to me to see if they had that, “She must be crazy look”. It’s fortunate in life when you can enjoy the people you work with. I’m a little envious that you get to retire and I don’t.
Best wishes in your retirement years!

  4. I’ve so enjoyed my morning commutes with Betsy. I’ve also retired by still liked to hear her voice on the mornings I travel to my wonderful volunteer job. I hope she enjoys her retirement as much as I do mine. Betsy, thanks for all the times you started my day off with a smile.

  5. Betsy. Please change your mind. I will miss you terribly. Much as I appreciated your replacements when you were not there, I was always so happy when you were back. You always picked the most quirky items — in addition to the “hard” news. I frequently would see an item, and bet (with myself) that you would bring it up. I have about a 50% win record. Seriously, I wish you the best of a retirement, but if it gets a bit boring, please come back. Thanks for the greatest of times. Karen Parker

  7. Betsy, I will miss you in the mornings! I’ve heard you on the radio off and on, going back to when I was listening to a country music station, which is long gone. I’m happy for you in your retirement, if not jealous, I’ve got many years to go still! I will also miss the news on KDFC, good or bad, it was my signal to get up in the morning. Now I’ll probably never get up on time! ;)

  8. Dear Betsy,

Can I come with you to retirement? I will really miss you in the mornings as you and Hoyt joke and while away the morning. I know you will have a wonderful time! Very best wishes!

  9. Betsy: I am so happy for you that you are inspired to (and can :)
retire! HOWEVER, I will seriously miss your delightful voice and sense of humor on KDFC. You and Hoyt are “my people” in the morning! I will be sending warm and fuzzy thoughts to Hoyt as I know this will be most difficult for him. I thank you so very much for your good company these many years and wish you the very best of life to come!

  10. Betsy, you will be sorely missed! I got just enough news, traffic and weather to feel informed. It didn’t interfere with the music either. You and Hoyt made a wonderful team and I loved the joking, laughter and exchanges that made me feel like I was on the inside working with 2 wonderful friends. I wish you well in retirement and hope life blesses you with all you could wish for. Give us an update now and again, please?

  12. BETSY & JOHN BOTH GONE?! :-(
What a way to start the week! I knew something was wrong when I turned on KDFC yesterday morning, just before 6:30 as usual: no Hoyt, no Betsy, and no Steve subbing with the news– no news at all while we start our day during the next hour or so! Hmmm? Then I heard Dianne on my way home, knowing she’s never on the air that late in the afternoon…where’s John? I wondered aloud to my son as we drove home from work/school. It was such a relief to hear Hoyt’s voice this morning (thanks!), but no Betsy…hmm? what’s going on at KDFC? Betsy went to Hawaii, but still gone? and no news…then, when I was just about ready to check on-line and risk being late to work, Hoyt said it: Betsy “retired” Wow! what a surprise! And then I found out that John is gone too– so suddenly. Talk about the “surprise at five!” I’ve been bummed all day. How very much they are already missed. Best wishes to them both. Hang in there, Hoyt!

  14. Betsy!!!

    Oh. You are blessed.

    Retire. (to re – inspire?)

Oh, please know how MUCH you will be missed. Your infectious laugh in the mornings with Hoyt … have you folks thought about teaming up … your own routines on CD’s …. would this be allowed?

You two are a fantastic team! Sorrow and more sorrow until we hear that we are able to access your sweet sense of humor and laugh somewhere …. these are difficult times … now they are recatagorized as the ‘worst of times’! NO Hoyt and Betsy in the mornings! (who is going to be Hoyts therapist to get him through this, must be, difficult transition?)

Don’t feel bad Betsy … re: you are not being replaced … WHO could they possibly find that would be as comforting to hear in the mornings as you … yes, that’s correct NO ONE!!!)

    You ARE irreplaceable.

Hoyt! Find a way to keep her in our lives, if only occasionally.

  15. Dearest dearest Betsy,

As excited as I am for your retirement, I can not help but wish you to change your mind. Who is going to bring us the quirky news? And the love of pooches, and have you thought about Hoyt? You are an item!

Just like you will miss hanging out with Hoyt for three hours a day, we will miss hanging out with you. I hope your retirement is full of fabulous trips, great food, and lot’s of dog walks. And I hope I will run into you at an intimate concert, or a special KDFC event at the tech, or maybe at a lobby concert.

I can’t tell you,Betsy, how often I’d look at the clock and head to the radio to click it on so you & Hoyt could officially start my day. I’m ususally in my office every morning around 5:30 and you and Hoyt always provided the perfect balance to help me get the day started. Your sense of humor and ability to keep Hoyt ‘in line’ invariably caused me to laugh out loud.

  19. Big bummer.Happy for you but oh so sad for me. You are the family I wake up to in the morning..it’s my yoga, my hug, my cup of joe, my start to the day. I’ve laughed until I cried. I shared with a friend a couple of days ago, before I heard of your retirement, that you and Hoyt for the past 6 years have been my morning 3 hours every day as I work from home before heading to the office. What will Hoyt do? But..it isn’t about us..it’s about you. Congrats and very best wishes. I can only imagine the joy and humor you bring to others in your life.

  20. Dear Betsy:
I am happy for you that you can retire, but will miss you in the morning with Hoyt. Over the years – many years – I have enjoyed Radio Teams and felt like you and Hoyt and them were friends in the morning who got me out of bed and going to work. And as time does pass and things change, most of those radio teams are gone. You and Hoyt make one of the best teams on radio and I know I am not alone in saying you will be missed. I hope when I retire (soon?) that there will be one or two people who will miss me as much as you will be. Thanks for being a morning voice who was always upbeat (maybe even when you did not feel that way) and funny for us.

  21. Dear Betsy,

NO-o-o-o-o-o… Come Baaaaack! Life won’t be the same. Hoyt is great, but the two of you got our household’s day off on the right foot. The lively sense of humor the two of you projected was fabulous. And, I actually structured making the first pot of coffee for my wife so that I could listen to your first morning newscast. You more than gave me a superb précis of the day’s news, but opened my eyes to something unusual or gave me a wonderful laugh in your last \news\ item. So many times, my wife, Bonnie, and I would comment, \Wherever does she find these stories?\ So, please, please, please come back.

And thank you for all you brought us — and the world.

I certainly love retirement and in that regard strongly encourage Betts towards that wonderful new life…. BUT I am sure going to miss her infectious laughter and partnering with Hoyt. She has seemed to just melt into the groove with their commentary and antics, it is so much fun to listen to. I will really miss here presence. Welcome to retired life, it is great. RC

  24. Dearest Betsy,

I am a speaking voice and charisma coach. And one of the main places that I recommend that my clients listen – for an outstanding example, is to you and Hoyt Smith each morning. You both not only have wonderful voices and up-beat personalities, but the combination of your interactions is quite magical. Hearing you laugh at Hoyt’s jokes, and Hoyt’s comments about you, always made me grin. We will miss you greatly. Hope that you reconsider – and stay!

  26. Dear Bets,
I don’t normally blog, in fact, this is the first time for me. However, your retirement caught me totally off guard and has left me with an empty feeling. Like all the others, I too will truly miss the repartee between you and Hoyt. While the other bloggers wrote of listening to you on their morning commute or as they were getting ready in the morning, I listened to you and Hoyt in the late afternoon from my home just outside Geneva, Switzerland. As a former Bay Area resident and Cal grad, I would listen to your traffic reports thinking that that’s one thing I sure do NOT miss. But I will miss you! I wish you all the very best in your retirement. Check in on Hoyt once in a while, just to keep him grounded!

  29. Betsy, you will be missed. Indeed, the ‘morning blend’ of Hoyt & you has given us all a great deal of pleasure. It’s amazing how radio gets under one’s skin. Sunday, Ric Malone played the Stravinsky that used to be the midnight sign-off music and another piece that was the old KIBE-AM ‘patterns in music’ (back in the days of Doug Pledger) and I saw my life flash before me. You & Hoyt are now part of the DNA, I guess — even if Hoyt plays too much raucous music in the early morning (how much Strauss can we take?!). — DW

  31. Oh,my, such a double edged sword: the joys of retirement for Betts and the loss for this and many other listeners, so it seems, of the June Allison of the airwaves. Gotta tell you, there were many days I had to laugh out loud at the banter between you and Hoyt. Who cares if other drivers thought I had lost my mind; they could have joined me. How I will miss that along with the “In the Road, Bingo” and “Ladder O’ the Day.” What are we going to do for chuckles now? Hoyt…guess you’ll just have to step it up. You will be and are missed, Betsy. Do grace us with an occasional visit, won’t you? Enjoy your retirement, and should you find it too dull, your audience awaits.

  36. Well, here’s the end of another great comedy team. There was Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone and she retired – then there was George Burns and Gracie Allen and she retired. Now Betsy is retiring. It isn’t fair. Gosh, how I’ll miss you. But it is good to still have Hoyt. I guess I’m showing my age here, but I wake up with KDFC every morning and it makes my day.

    Comment by Bevo Zellick — May 20, 2009 @ 7:29 am

  37. I guess we can change our alarm clock now. We always wake up to KDFC and some time ago we moved the set time from 7 a.m. back to 6:45 because we noted Betsy usually gave a quick update of the news during that time. It was our few minutes to just luxuriate in bed and listen before facing the routines of the day.
Now I’m going to suggest to hubby that we set it back to 7:00, enjoy those few minutes of extra sleep, and just concentrate on the music for our wake up call. We will miss the banter and exchanges between you two, but maybe the extra sleep will make up for it!
Seriously, you will be missed, and we hope that you find plenty to enjoy in retirement. Thanks for all the memories and good luck.

I set my clock to 5:45, and I used to force myself to get out of bed after you did the news. 51. I started listening to your program after visiting my daughter in San Francisco. The bed and breakfast inn where I stayed had your programs playing in the morning during breakfast. When I came home to PA, I listened online and became an avid fan. When I retired, I had more time to savor your morning banter as I listened and in a way felt closer to my daughter when you gave bay area news and weather reports. Best wishes on your retirement, Betsy! I think they should change the name “retired” because it has the word “tired” in it – have you ever seen a retiree who looks tired? Rested, yes, but tired, NEVER! Enjoy your time for travel and friends.

KDFC is not the same without you in the morning. Nevertheless, we hope you truly enjoy being retired. I would like to retire myself, but still need the paycheck because I did not squirrel away enough $$ to live the way I would like to. Thank you for all the good mornings you and Hoyt gave us. 59. Betsy, what a sad day. This morning when I heard Hoyt talk about the stocks I knew something was wrong. I can only repeat what everyone else has said, that you and Hoyt made a great team. Of course Hoyt is wonderful but you had such repartee together… Of course this is sad for your audience, but not for you, and I wish you all the best. By the way, I have often wondered how you and Hoyt were always able to sound so upbeat. Is that just the way you are, or is that something all people who are on the air know how to do? Please ask Hoyt to stay on for a while, even if solo.

I will miss hearing your voice but congratulate you on retiring. Many thanks for all of those wonderful wake up calls, especially on those dark cloudy days. You’re the best.

  62. Betsy you are truly a special person. I suppose nobody knows that better than Hoyt. You and Hoyt made the mornings sparkle for me. You were there as his “straight” man when his mornings went ory. Hoyt always had someone with whom to discuss the news, market, social issues, travel and pets; and someone to poke a little fun at. I loved your perspective and hearing about your life. As Hoyt was giving us the bad news I had tears in my eyes, for you leaving; and for Hoyt’s personal and professional loss. Wishing you much happiness and love in your retirement. And after listening to you talk about postponing your retirement (as I have done)due to the declining stock market, I was surprised that the stock market came back enough for anyone to retire!! 63. Betsy, I will truly miss the morning quips between you and Hoyt. I listen in the morning on the way to work and enjoy the laughter you two create. You will be missed, but I can understand the lure of retirement. I am headed down that same path in about 4 years. Good luck and happiness in whatever you choose to do during your retirement. Isn’t Hawaii just wonderful. My husband and I didn’t want to leave the lanai chairs on the beach as we listened to the waves pound the shore, with Hawaiian music playing in the background. Hope to return for a visit soon. Best of luck.

  65. Betsy, You and Hoyt are the Dynamic Duo of the morning airwaves. It’s difficult for all of us to see such a great team split up.
Thanks for helping us greet the day in your own cheerful way these past 7 years. I will miss your always interesting and informative Music News items, too. Wishing you the very best and good health in your retirement.

  66. Betsy…I am in denial about your leaving us. I have this childish wish that I will wake up tomorrow morning and you will be back. And Hoyt sounds like he is just casting-about the studio trying to adjust to going solo. It’s sad for so many of your listeners, but so good for you. Although there are so many negative things happening in our world now, there also are many, many wonderful people, places and things to appreciate in life, so I wish you the best as you explore and enjoy them in your retirement! –Julie mesas

  67. Betsy, you and Hoyt are part of my life in the morning while driving the kids to school and then on the way to work. Now I can not hear that familiar sound and jokes any more. It is hard to adjust.

My best wishes to you and you are really missed.

Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your sense of fun,

  69. will miss Betsy very much. I’ve enjoyed her tremendously. I wish her the best in her new endeavours. I am very dissapointed that you are dropping news and weather. Although there are other stations where you can get that information, they don’t also have classical music. Like another responder, I’d set my radio early to wake up to music and get up after the first news cast. In the morning, you need news, weather and traffic. You need to know if the public transit agencies are delayed. Mornings have a lot of things that have to be done. One doesn’t have time to change stations to get needed information, then go back to classical music. This is a big mistake and will limit the time I listen to the radio station. I will be listening to KDFC less and watching morning television more. That is really too bad, but I won’t have a choice unless you continue to offer news and weather.

  70. Dear Betsy,

I have enjoyed listening to you and Hoyt laugh and joke in the mornings, it made waking up more fun. I really liked when you would both start getting goofy! Enjoy retirement and live your life to the fullest. I’m sure your dog will get use to having you around.

  71. Dear Betsy,

Will miss your lovely voice and the unique interaction in conversation with Hoyt Smith, as well as the news and weather report. However, you will enjoy your retirement. I have been retired for quite a few years now and am active in a number of volunteer organizations which I was not able to do while working full time.

Sorry to hear John Evans was leaving. I wish you both well.

    Sincerely,

  72. Mornings are certainly different without Betsy and Hoyt together. We have really enjoyed waking to your quips, laughter, banter and news. The lightness and sparkle really started out the day with a smile….a real plus. Hoyt, that is going to be a tough job to keep up, but if anyone can, I know you will. Have fun in retirement Betsy! Hope you call in once in a while. Meanwhile, please keep the news summary. I don’t want to have to change stations to find out the highlights of what’s going on (and which commute route to take or avoid). I don’t want all news, just the highlight and the quirky things, and I want it with the classical music not instead of the music. All our best! Jo & Bob

  73. Dear Betsy.
It’s hard to say goodbye, and yet, I know we have have to move on sometime. Even radio programs that pretend to have ‘wild and wicked’ teams don’t have the chemistry the two of you have shared with us.
Thanks for the fun, thanks for the memories, and have a great time.
P.S. If you ever get back and want to do a guest appearance, I’m sure none of us will mind. Right, Hoyt?

  74. Having recently voted the Hoyt & Betsy team best D J’s on radio, I am devastated to hear that I will not hear you two as a team. Things and times change. I will miss you, Betsy on my drive to work and will remember my favorite team as the best on radio. What great chemistry you two provided on the air. So, Hoyt, it’s you and me on the drive to work henceforth. Best wishes to Betsy for a wonderful retirement and “thanks for the memories”. John

  80. Dear Betsy,
It’s just unbelievable that you’re gone. Hoyt seems lonely without you. The morning show is not the same without you. It is so important that we have news, traffic, and the beautiful music to start our day. I have to now change stations to get the news, weather, and traffic. I wish you well in your retirement, but you are a huge loss to my morning. Hope you enjoy many happy times. Thank you for the fun you and Hoyt brought to my mornings.

  82. Some people have a face that the camera loves – just the right planes and angles. Some people, like Betsy, have a voice that reaches right through the microphone and touches the listener, with humor (especially) and uses a professional voice that handles information just right. I hadn’t realized how much the two voices complimented each other until she wasn’t there this week. I’m a big Hoyt fan – no question. But she brought just the right balance to “the act”. Many good wishes for whatever lies ahead; she will not be soon forgotten! Thanks for all the good news!

  83. Betsy, I have had the radio on at my bedside for 5 years, never turn it off, It is set on KDFC. I can listen to my Classical music anytime I want to. The best part of my day is waking up to the sound of Hoyt and Betsy laughing! I’m retired and I appreciate being able to lie in bed until I want to get up! If it is raining at 3 AM, I am concerned that the two of you are on the highway and I say a little payer for your safety and pretty soon I can hear your voices and know my day will be bright! Keep up the good work Hoyt and Betsy stop by when you are in San Francisco and say HI to us! I’ll miss your baby heart!

  86. I am a devoted (passionate) KDFC listener living in Ecuador for 21 years. I listen to KDFC at least 8 hours every day (home and office) and thank you and all the staff for saving my sanity..not just an island, but a life.

I just heard you announce that Betsy is leaving. I am sad! I truly enjoyed the rapport and, in particular, her laugh always brought a smile, every day. The traffic report? That’s another thing..but I did listen closely and smiled to myself when I didn’t have to take the Bay Bridge to work.

Betsy and I are from Holyoke, Massachusetts and she once remarked how funny it was that we located ourselves so far from Holyoke…and now, she is going further.

Again, thank you for my daily dose of calm and tranquility. Much appreciated. Like so many others, I too will miss the Betsy and Hoyt show. Best wishes to you Betsy.

  89. Happy Retirement Betsey! Mornings won’t be the same!
Hoyt’s comment about a tear-fest are right on! I know that I can hardly type this out! What I’ll miss most: 1) The perfect match of personalities with you and Hoyt with that light-hearted, upbeat repartee. 2) The natural and easy style in which you deliver the news / interest stories -as if you were a friend bringing me up to speed for the day. 3) Your unflaggingly positive attitude! Even when the news is dire or shake-your-head-at-those-bozos silly, you would bring it back with a look-on-the-bright-side comment to finish it off. My husband & I actually timed the alarm clock to go off 2 minutes before the news every weekday so we could start the day with the Gentle Betsy to break it in right.
Come back anytime! PLEASE! But whatever you do, Enjoy! Monique & Tim in the East Bay

  92. Betsy –
Your distictive voice, filled with joy and twinkling with fun, has lifted me up on mornings when I was too burdened with life. I will miss your sense of humor, your banter with Hoyt, and your evident love of life in general. But, having grown up in the Islands I know what that can do to a person as well. I wish you lots of Leonard’s Malasadas, Zippy’s Saimin, Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, cold fresh papaya with your breakfast of Portuguese sausage, rice and eggs, the energy of creation in sun and ocean and volcanoes, and above all deep ALOHA. Aloha no!

  96. Hello,Betsy,
How “selfish” of you to just trail off into the sunset! You will certainly be missed, not only by Hoyt but very much by you listeners. The chemistry that must have existed between you and Hoyt litterally permiated the show and gave us a warm feeling.Something like that,in todays commercialism and the way most radio programs are run, is indeed very rare and a real treat for the listeners. Both my husband and I do feel sorry for Hoyt. He must be very sad and feel quite lonely. At the same time we congratulate you and wish you many golden years and much happiness.

for many years, listening to you on the way to work – and laughing out loud most every day – made having to get up early tolerable. No matter what my mood, by the time I got to work I was always smiling. You and Hoyt made the best team; I will miss your laugh, your voice, your funny and smart comments.

We enjoy your newscast very much. Her reaction yesterday when I told her you’re retiring is sadness. I guess we’re so used to your voice we will miss you dearly.

  101. Betsy,

The quality of life in the Bay Area just took a direct hit. The emotion in Hoyt’s voice said it all when he announced your retirement. Like many people my morning alarm is set to Hoyt and Betsy. Yes I will continue to enjoy both the music and Hoyt’s commentaries, but that unique blend of candid humor the two of you shared with ‘us’ will be difficult, if not impossible to replace. My congratulations to you; my empathy to Hoyt.

  102. I’ve never been a fan of news on radio when I want to listen to music, but Betsy and Hoyt were a great team. I think the show is better without the news, but I’ll miss Betsy. I also suspect the departures of Betsy and John Evans were layoffs, and the survivors are putting a brave face on it. That’s the reason we won’t hear Betsy in a farewell visit. This is a hard time for commercial radio, and it’s likely to get worse. Remember when DJs used to work four-hour shifts? You don’t see that anymore. Best wishes to the past and present staff!

I wish I could think of something more or different to add to all the other messages above, but I can’t! This feels like saying goodbye to a dear friend, and it’s sad. 106. The little pleasant rituals of life mean so much – and Betsy and Hoyt have been part of my morning ritual for a long time now. I loved how Betsy and Dusty took over when Hoyt was in the hospital, and I learned to depend on Betsy’s weather forecast every morning to decide what to wear to work! Your grace under fire a few weeks ago when all of the computers went down and you both had to fill dead air for quite a long time was both very funny and very impressive. I’ll miss the banter, the jokes, Betsy’s infectious chuckle, and the sense of being included in what is obviously a firm friendship.

Your caring relationship with each other really came through and somehow conveyed a calmness at the start of the day that gave one the confidence to move ahead. 118. Well, it’s Thursday and am still stunned. Just when I was realizing how fortunate in these recessive time to have at least one constant, Hoyt & Betsy to start my day, alas, that too is to be no more. I have always loved t listen to male./female teams in the broadcast word and there have a couple that were tolerable. But Hoyt & Betsy were naturals. I could feel the camaraderie for each other and each other spouses. How refreshing and real that was. One person suggested (I didn’t read them all)that bets come back from time to time. I vote for that. In the mean time, keep the music that moves me coming Hoyt. I know you must be in a state fo shock as most of the KDFC AM listeners are.
Enjoy your retirement Betsy, you have enriched my life with your time in my radio.

It really feels like something is missing on KDFC right now – this big hole … I’m glad that Hoyt is still around.

  123. Dear Betsy, my mornings will never be the same. Whoever decided that morning news and traffic ala Betsy style just didn’t realize that for many of us, it was just enough and delivered so we could laugh at it and not take life so serously. The repartee between you and Hoyt was priceless and there were some mornings I would have to pull over to the side of the road because I was laughing so hard, thus extending my lifespan. 127. Dear Betsy, It was always a pure pleasure to hear your voice in the morning. The music was enjoyable – but we always took a minute to stop and listen to your news. Although it’s hard to imagine our mornings without you we truly wish you a rewarding retirement and many wonderful years shared with friends and family. Hears to you…your health…and all that you brought to all of us…Yours truly, Steve and Cheryl Brodie

  128. Dear Besty,I know that Hawaii really gets to you, but my husband and I sure will miss you on KDFC. Hoyt can’t even get the weathher, news, traffic or stock market on air without you!

  129. Hi Betsy,

I wish you the best in your retirement. You are sorely missed! It’s been a long week without you to brighten up my mornings. You and Hoyt were such a great team and it was always wonderful when you would crack each other up to the point of not being able to keep talking. Very best wishes on your retirement, and thanks so much for all the good times.

  130. Dear Betsy,

I am really going to miss you. I loved the interaction between you and Hoyt and I will miss that a lot.

The very best to you in your retirement and I wish you all the best.

    Steve

  131. We’ll miss you Betts! It’s amazing how lonely Hoyt sounds now without his broadcast partner offering her repartee and “just in time” market reports. When you two reached a pointed laughter and the short aired silence that accompanied it, I would laugh like crazy at the subtle sophistication of the symbiosis you two had achieved. My personal morning commute will never be the same. I know how Kauai does that kind of thing to a person and since 1994 have visited annually just for the peace and tranquility(and certainly to visit my in-laws). We have all enjoyed your “gig” at KDFC and wish the best in your retirement.

  132. Go well into retirement. Even though I never needed the traffic info, I was driving my computer at home, In the Road Bingo and your wonderful sense of humor and the absurd made me listen anyway.

  133. Dear Betsy, it just isn’t the same without you and Hoyt talking through the news, with your great sense of humor. You made it possible to start the day on an upbeat note. Thanks so much. I hope you find someone to listen to now, and can enjoy your retirement. SIncerely, Germaine LaBerge

  134. I headed to work every morning during the summer months listening to you two ham things up! I loved how you found humor in the little things of life, and listening to your laughter was a great way to start the day. Have a great retirement, Betsey! I wish you well!

  135. Betsy,
I realized that you, like me, are a displaced New Englander in the fall of 2004. I had totally, definitively, and with absolute finality, turned my back on the Red Sox. On at least 3 separate occasions. And was finally succeeding when YOU reeled me right back in with your comments on the Great Comeback (after game 6: “They’re KILLING me!”) Thanks for restoring my citizenship in The Nation. And thanks for helping ease us into our mornings. I will greatly miss your wry commentary and quirky stories, and your banter with Hoyt. Enjoy your retirement — but call in every now and then!

  136. I do have to admit that this was the best way to exit. Of course, it still caught me off-guard as I was traversing the Dumbarton Bridge – thank goodness I kept my hands on the wheel. Others have mentioned that the goodbye show would have been tearful, but we all seek closure.

So this note goes out to you with a sincere thank you for the smiles, giggles and laughs provided in the AM. Altho’ you were on for just 3 hours daily, it seemed longer.

I wish you the best in your retirement. So many books to read, sites to see and a life to enjoy.

  137. Betsy, it is not the same! Morning needs your quirky view of the world, the silly byplay between you and Hoyt, the ladder of the day. Thank you for the good mornings you gave us all.

  138. Dear Betsy,

I never thought I would feel acquainted with people just by listening to them on the radio and then suddenly I started having to commute and discovered that if I could be in my car by 6.30am I would be in time to catch Betsy and Hoyt having a little chat about whatever was in the news. It felt as though it was not quite so early to have some cheerful friends to tune into – so I’ll really miss you.
    Best wishes on your retirement!

  139. Betsy was my on air partner from 1989-1997 at two country stations, KSAN and KYCY. You couldn’t ask for a better person to wake up with (that sounded wrong)…you know what I mean. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss her educated wit and classy take on the world. If any Irish lass from Holyoke deserves a comfy and warm retirement with handsome Bob and Mickey the lab, it’s the Betser. I love you, kiddo.

  140. Betsy, After reading the prior blogs, i just cannot begin to top it, but here goes. You and Hoyt were the proper way to start my day at the office. Coffee, starting up the computer (logging into KDFC on-line first thing) and getting set for the day. I loved the banter between you two and, as asked in an earlier blog by a fellow listener, whose going to keep Hoyt in line?!! My thanks to you both for bring humor to the air. Best wishes on your retirement – are you sure you couldn’t come back?

  141. How could it happen ,one morning I turned on my favorite station and all was changed,Oh woe is me!
Congratulations on retirement ,Betsy , but I will miss
your fun banter in the morning with Hoyt.I always looked forward to what crazy news item would come up and where the ladder would be.
You and Hoyt made an excellent team that was so much fun to listen to.
Enjoy the sunsets and the dog walks as long as you can. Best of luck. JoAnne Craig ,Vallejo

  142. oh betsy. it’s hard to describe how i felt when i heard about your retirement. you have been a godsend to me – every morning, since your first show. i missed elaine leong; and dusti/y?; and now i will miss you, too. you have a wonderful voice, contagious laugh – you can speak and get the updates out THROUGH your laughter which makes me laugh harder (my morning cardio). you and hoyt have been a mainstay and as important to me as my morning cup o’ coffee.

i haven’t read any other posts b/c i’m quite moved as i write this and applaud myself for remembering to log on after work!!

i believe we are sort of neighbors – and if i EVER hear your voice in line or in a crowd, please don’t be upset if i introduce myself merely to shake your hand and say ‘grazie mille’ for all the great memories and shows.

my very best wishes to you always. dianne/glenview

  144. Ham and eggs; salt and pepper; Amos and Andy. That is (was) Hoyt and Betsy and you are so, so missed, Betsy. It was bad enough when Dusty left and now logarithmically (10 times) worse. Hoyt has to do everything by himself.

We wish you all the best.

  145. Betsy, best wishes for an enjoyable retirement — you’ve earned it. You and Hoyt helped me wake up my sleepy self morning after norning, and it was fun to listen to you. (And every once in a while, your sharp mind would be revealed by a comment or two that another radio “personality” might have censored, always expressed in a professional way, never crass.) Thank you over and over for those mornings.

  146. Betsy,
The sound of your laughter is missed tremendously as I ride to work each morning. Listening to you and Hoyt always made me smile if not laugh. You were a great team! Wishing you all the best; it is well deserved.

  147. We thought Hoyt was joking a couple of weeks ago when he said Betsy wasn’t coming back from Hawaii, but we now see from the website that it’s true! My 11-year-old son Sam and I listen to the morning show every day before he goes to school (as we have since he was in kindergarten!)

We’ll miss Betsy very much because she always started our day on a happy track. We wish her the very best! We just hope Hoyt isn’t thinking about going anywhere soon!

    Thanks, Teresa and Sam Agate

  149. Dear Betsy,

Your contributions to my morning commute will forever be appreciated. However, I gotta tell you, having just retired from public education at the age of 56, RETIREMENT ROCKS!!!!!! We get to work when we feel like it, sleep in (or not), and know that what we did was really worthwhile. Oh, and we no longer have to commute ;-)

You will be missed, but enjoy the next chapter, because there is always a next chapter!

In the Road Bingo is a brilliant game! Try it on I-5 to Los Angeles sometime: particularly funny!

  150. My husband and I just returned from Hawaii ourselves and when he had to go back to work on Monday we realized that Betsy was not on our wake-up show. We loved waking up to the two of you and your banter and will miss you, Betsy! I retired almost six years ago and love it! Your days will be busier than you can imagine. The best thing for me, as a woman, has been reconnecting and nurturing friendships, something I didn’t have much time for when I was working. If you’re not on Facebook, sign up! Along with KDFC, it’s one of my addictions!

  151. Dear Betsy,
You will surely be missed!!! It’s already not the same – I love listening to Hoyt, but the rapport and chemistry that you and Hoyt have is special!!! I love the banter between the two of you – It is so heartwarming to hear you two and think, gee, these people enjoy each other’s company and really love their jobs!!!! I will miss your voice and once-in-a-while giggle!!! Have a wonderful retirement!! There is nothing like living in Hawaii!! (if only things weren’t so expensive)

P.S. I was sad that they took off your biography so quickly.

  152. Heavens to Betsy! Look at all these posts!

    Betsy,
It was so good to hear your voice this morning chatting with Hoyt just like the old days. I’ve just decided to retire from teaching.
I haven’t had time to read as many books as you have because my life has gotten busier. I’m going to marry my partner of three years and a true love, Helen. It’s only two weeks away! Holy Toledo!
    Best to you,
    Tom

Just a quick note to wish you the very best.
I particularily enjoyed the chemistry you and Hoyt brought to the show as a duo and have found myself timing my home departure in the morning to catch the news and your lighthearted exchanges. They were the highlight of my daily morning commute and I do miss them.

  154. I miss you so much! Basking in the relationship between you and Hoyt was the only way I could wake up every morning. Thank you so much for sharing your sharedness with us, your listeners. I wish you were still there together on the radio, but I am so grateful for all the years I got to enjoy you. Thank you!
